Off to an early start!

We checked the hives today and things are looking great. It was a bit breezy at times, but when it was still, they were flying like mad and bringing in loads of bright yellow pollen:

This lady landed on Greg’s head for a few minutes on her way home. :-) We’re trying to figure out what the pollen’s from.

The mainland hive foragers were also bringing in a creamy white pollen that we also don’t know and judging by the larder, they’re collecting from many different sources:

The other beautiful surprise is that the queens in all three hives are laying and the brood patterns are gorgeous. The mainland hive, where this pollen storage shot is from, is a bit ahead of the island hives. They also have capped drone brood:

We’re taking my Cub pack out to visit this hive in two weeks and it looks like we’ll be able to show them how we split a hive, too. :-)
